H is for Hiccup Helps

Hiccups can be humiliating, especially if they strike suddenly in polite company.

What is a hiccup?

Essentially, a hiccup is an involuntary convulsion of sorts. The diaphragm contracts suddenly, shutting the vocal cords. Without warning, the affected person issues a “Hic!”

How can hiccups be halted?

Folks have passed around many possible remedies for hiccups. Here are some tricks to try.

  • Ask someone to scare you.
  • Breathe into a small brown paper lunch bag.
  • Cover your ears, and swallow hard.
  • Drink a full glass of water in one gulp.
  • Eat a spoonful of sugar.
  • Hold your breath.
  • Sip a glass of water through a straw.
  • Suck a lemon or lime wedge.
  • Swallow a tablespoon of peanut butter.
  • Try a taste of fresh honey.

Some of these hiccup remedies may work well, and some may not. And some may be credited as working, simply because someone’s hiccups ran out of gas on their own.
